Aside from the water being a little murky to look at, I found Amsterdam to be one of the most beautiful cities I'd ever seen. It was clean, and quaint, and mostly quiet away from the train station and the main street. Even the redlight district (you can't go to Amsterdam and NOT go there! :-) was amazingly clean and beautiful.
